Civic Centre Cabinet for Southern Guild 2012
The overriding concept behind “High-rise” is to examine our institutional architectural heritage, by referencing modernist structures, (by post -war intellectual elite) whose design ethic resided in using industrially-produced architecture.
Formally the work is industrially fabricated, referencing the mass-manufactured and hand-made both trademarks of the Piers’ design process.
With an emphasis on the “monumental” Piers parodies a brutalist mind set through his adopting of a machine aesthetic. By further eliminating unnecessary detail, he is creating a playful commentary by manipulation through his use of scale, form and function .
Product name: civic
Product category: cabinet
Materials: anodized aluminum
Dimensions if applicable: 1950x250x1050mm
Q&A with: Alma Viviers
AV: What inspired the specific piece?
PM: Please see press release sent earlier… Aggressively monumental modernist architecture.
AV: Describe the way you work.
PM: Im drawn to something, which on examination tells me how to proceed. The final product is a result of playing with an idea until I’m satisfied there is something inherent in the piece that will speak to the viewer.
AV: What do you love about this particular medium/material?
PM: Conceptually the work starts as an idea then the design takes shape, then the process is machine made and hand finished
AV: How is this unlike anything you’ve done before?
PM: It is a process of discovering and…although familiar, it also has an unknown outcome each time.
